Cursing a Tree and a Temple
Preacher: Series: The Gospel of Mark: Following the Suffering Servant Scripture: Mark 11:12–26
Series Sermon #37: In typical Markan fashion, in this text we have the combined stories of the cursing of a fig tree and the Temple. Having already surveyed the Temple, Jesus begins on a journey to end distracting practices in the Court of the Gentiles, stopping briefly to curse a tree on the way. These two stories reveal Jesus's discontent with the Jewish people. If a tree is known by its fruit, then their utter fruitlessness reveals that things are not right.
