Awana Info

Welcome to Awana!!

Awana is a ministry of Colonial Baptist Church in Virginia Beach. Originally, the acrostic "AWANA" stood for Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed, taken from 2 Timothy 2:15: "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."

Awana was founded in 1950 as a parachurch organization by Art Rorheim and Pastor Lance Latham. It is a structured children's discipleship program that includes Bible teaching, Scripture memorization, game time and many other fun activities throughout the school year! The purpose of Awana is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ and to help local churches reach children, youth, and their families with the gospel.

The emphasis of Awana is the memorization of God's Word as a primary means of a child growing in his/her relationship with God.  This is accomplished in the context of discipleship with adult leaders who are passionate about Jesus Christ.

Children ages 3 years old through the 6th grade are invited to participate. Club activities start at 7:00 PM and end at 8:15 PM on Wednesday nights from September through May.

When and where do we meet?

We meet Wednesday evenings, from 7:00-8:15pm, September through May, at Colonial Baptist Church. (For parents, Equip Classes at the church run concurrently, from 7:00-8:15pm. Youth group also meets from 7:00-8:15pm at the church.)
